Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease which results in high levels of glucose in the blood and affects 9.3% of Americans

Stem cell researchers are focusing on how to make beta cells to treat diabetes. Beta cells are cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. Currently, researchers are trying to accomplish this in three different ways. The methods are reprogramming adult stem cells to create new beta cells, turning embryonic stem cells into beta cells, and speeding up cell the division rate of existing beta cells.
